When you are down, and feeling like life is just being a bit unfair, you can take measures to start to change your life around. If you find yourself heading down a path you hadn’t expect here are some small things you can do.
Probably 18 years ago, some who knew me, would probably say I was inching towards “rock bottom” and was making poor life choices. It took me getting into trouble with the law, to snap out of it and work towards changing my life around.
There were so many things that I've learned over the years, which make me who I am today. About 3 years ago, I took another strong blow when my mother passed away. I didn't hit rock bottom, but I definitely was struggling, and still do sometimes.
There is no getting away from it.

Sometimes life can suck. Days go by where nothing seems to go to plan, and in fact, you could put money on the fact that while it’s currently 30 degrees and sunny, if you went out in a t-shirt, it would rain.
Write Down Your Goals
Sometimes it can be that we are a bit aimless at the moment. The loss of a job or a significant other can leave us adrift. And setting goals, even small ones can keep us ticking over and feeling accomplished. You can hold yourself accountable too. The best thing to do is to write them down so that you can cross them off as you work to change your life around.
Seek out Therapy
If there is more to it that a slightly unsettled period and you feel like things aren’t getting better or you are struggling with your new situation, then seek therapy. Dr Richard Grose says “Entering therapy can be one of the best decisions a person can make—and one of the hardest.” But being able to talk to someone about what is going on might give you a new perspective and clarity. Which is great.
Learn New Skills
Feeling bored, trapped or alone are great times to learn a new skill. Aside from opening up job opportunities, you will start to build up your self-esteem and confidence. Both of which will begin building you up from the inside. It might be a skill that you can apply in the workplace, or maybe you want to get really good at baking bread. Whatever it is, find tutorials online or head out and take classes.
Listen to Positive Podcasts
There is pretty much a podcast for anything. From true crime to daily motivation. You can get a fresh perspective, a morning boost, and even a new business idea – simply by listening to the experiences of others.
Get Rid of Negative Thoughts
If you find that you are complaining a lot. Seeming to be ungrateful, or lashing out a lot. Start recognizing that in yourself. It can be hard when we are faced with a mirror on our actions. But if you are always being negative, then you will find the negative in everything – and that is no way to live life. Every time you catch yourself starting a negative sentence take a pause and reframe it and you'll be able to change your life around without a skip of a beat in the future.
Read A New Book
It might be escapism, or it might be you expanding your horizons. Whatever it is, try to make time to read or listen to audiobooks. It helps you relax and unwind, and at the same time keeps your mind sharp. Much like the podcasts, it allows you to explore different perspectives and ideas.
Making an effort to change your life around into something a bit better will see that over time you can reframe and refocus with a more positive outlook. I know it's not easy, but if it was, everyone would be doing it, and then everyone would be the same.
