Have you heard of a term called Capsule Wardrobe before?
I hadn't until a few months ago. And it intrigued me so much that while I was purging unnecessary items for our garage sale, I started going through our wardrobes.
Though the husband and I try to adhere to a strict budget and tend to cut out lot of unnecessary items while working towards a more minimalist lifestyle. Which is really hard to do with kids living in the home.
We learned that it doesn't just stop at our home, we've started to venture into other aspects of our lifestyle such as the food we eat and even the clothes we wear. So we've started working on our capsule wardrobe.
While you may have already decluttered your wardrobe and got rid of many unwanted items and clothes you haven’t worm in years, there is an even further step you can go and that would be to create your own capsule wardrobe. But how do you go about doing that? With that in mind, here are some of the simple steps to help you achieve it.
Capsule Wardrobe: Why and How to Create One
You need the basics
The first area to start would be the basics and this tends to stem around those pieces of clothing you can wear day in day out. It is the likes of the white shirt and jeans, it’s the blazer and the t-shirts, and even the tailored items that you might need for work. The basics are the essential pieces that can form the basis of an outfit. You may want to choose to invest in these areas focusing on the quality of them items, as these tend to be something you will be wearing quite a lot.
You need statement pieces
A capsule wardrobe isn’t all about the boredom and plain outfits, you need those statement pieces that can be a real talking point. The brightly coloured coat, the fabulous boots, the amazing detailed top. Add a few different statement pieces to your capsule wardrobe. This will enable you to mix and match them with your basics to create different combinations of outfits.
Don’t be afraid to mix and match colors and textures
The beauty of the capsule wardrobe is to not be afraid to try different things. With less complication and choice, you shouldn’t be afraid to mix and match the different colors and textures you may have. This will give you the creativity element to help create different combinations of outfits time and time again.
Accessories can help change the whole look
With a capsule wardrobe you have less choice, so you may need to think outside of the box if you are trying to create a different look and this is where your accessories can play a huge part. Taking one outfit from day to night by adding a few key pieces and changes. For example, changing from flats to heels, or going from Wide calf boots to something more elegant for an evening. It might be adding a statement necklace instead of something simple. Adding dramatic drop earrings instead of the stud.
Think about a capsule wardrobe for different aspects of your life
Finally, think about what you need you capsule wardrobe for. Once you have the hang of it you may find that you end up having different wardrobes options for different aspects of your life. For example, separate capsule wardrobes for work and weekends. It can certainly help to save time in the morning.
Let’s hope that these simple steps have inspired you to consider creating your own capsule wardrobe yourself.
