As new dog owners, we have to research different ways of how we can take care of our pooch. However, not every information we see on the web is reliable and helpful. When we apply it, it could endanger the lives of our pet or it could worsen their situation.

Our new puppy, Loki, who is a 5 month old Pitbull Mix.

One of the basic information we need to learn is how to eliminate fleas. Many “experts” out there will recommend using pesticides for pest control.  Little do they know the dangers of using these methods not only for the pet but also its owners.  Entomologists found that pesticides do not work as well as people think. At most, its effectiveness and reliability is only at 85%.  The 15% left is enough to start another infestation.

Hence, it is recommended that you treat your premises every two to three weeks.  Can you imagine the danger this could bring to your family?  This is why experts recommend applying DIY and natural methods for pest management.  Here are natural ways you can eliminate fleas from your pets:

 Vacuum regularly

Did you know that flea eggs and pupae are difficult to eliminate using chemicals?  Their shells are impenetrable, not even the strongest pesticides can kill them. The best method to eliminate these is to vacuum your floors, carpets, bedding, and furniture.  These are the areas where flea eggs and pupae fall from your pet's fur.  If you vacuum regularly,  you can make a difference in the flea population around your area.

Make sure to throw all the contents away after using the vacuum.  This way, you can make sure that no egg can hatch and no pupae can turn into adults.

Use Diatomaceous Earth

Diatomaceous Earth, also known as DE, is a powder made of sediments and diatoms. It works well to destroy the exoskeleton of fleas, dehydrating these slowly, and killing them in the process.  In buying Diatomaceous Earth, make sure you choose the food-grade type so you can use it on your pet.  Simply sprinkle a generous amount of Diatomaceous Earth on their bodies 1 to 2 days before you bathe them.

When it's time for bathing, use natural shampoos specialize for tick and flea prevention.  Lather it and leave it for 15 minutes before rinsing.  So, you can suffocate every flea and increase your chances of eliminating them.

Don't forget to sprinkle Diatomaceous Earth on your floor, carpets, and bedding. Then, spread it thinly using a piece of cloth or a broom. Let it stay for 1 to 2 days before vacuuming.  This process will make your home unattractive to pests.  Reapply this method several times a week to maximize its effects.  If not, you can use baking soda and salt.  These two will generate the same results.

Wash pet bedding regularly

This is another important method to eliminate fleas and flea eggs.  Regularly wash pet bedding, mattresses, carpets, and other sheets where your pet usually sleeps or lounges.  As new dog owners, we often forget to clean their bedding. It's no different than our bedsheets needing to be washed weekly. Use a strong detergent to kill these pests.  And as much as possible, dry them using high heat.  If you do not have a dryer, you can utilize the power of the sun to dehydrate the flea eggs that still latch onto these garments.

Contact a pest control professional

Experts regard this as the most cost-effective way to eliminate fleas at home. Not only do they treat pests indoors, but they also prevent further infestations. This includes treating your yard and creating barriers to deter any more unwanted insects.  If you find a reliable pest control company that uses natural methods for pest control, have them on speed dial.  So, whenever you have pest problems, they'll be on their way to solve the problem.

What better way to achieve a pest-free environment than calling professional green exterminators who ensure the effectiveness and safety of their methods?  With their strategies, you can assure a comfortable environment for your pet and enjoy a healthy and loving companionship for as long as you live.
